硅藻土是一種具有生物結構的岩石。海水、湖水中的氧化硅的主要消耗者就是硅藻，構成硅藻軟泥，在成岩過程中經石化階段形成硅藻土。硅藻土中硅藻含量越多，染質越少，則顏色越白，質越輕。
